Proposal: Solution to Improve DAO Governance Efficiency

1. Motivation:

I believe Astar DAO is very serious about its Governance Process and involving community in making key decisions as evidently by the amount of work.

I’m a co-founder of Syncvote. I believe our tool can add tangible value to the implementation of Astar DAO’s governance process without any changes to the current setup. The goal is to let admins and members focus on making decisions instead of getting lost in tech stuff.

I previously raised a discussion on the forum (here: Automated workflow for Astar Dao) and upgraded our products continuously during the discussion, so I decided to start this thread to make a better presentation on how Astar DAO can benefit from Syncvote. If this is something interesting, I would like to take this to the next phase.

2. Problem Now:

I see 3 existing problems in implementing Astar DAO governance process:

  1. The proposer must remember all the technical details of the governance process to avoid making mistakes.
  2. The proposer has to bounce around different platforms, such as Astar, for each step of the process.
  3. Any solution that could potentially consolidate everything into one platform for consistency and ease of navigation would require the DAO to abandon its current setup and adopt a new one.

3. How We Solve It:

Syncvote provides a chrome extension. It works as a unified front-end for any DAO member that wants to make a proposal to Astar DAO. It acts like a central hub, no more bouncing between different platforms. Members can kick off and handle proposals, watch progress, and move through stages – all in one interface.

Why Syncvote will fit nicely into the current Astar DAO practice:

  1. Non-invasive, there isn’t any new platform to familiarize with, just open the extension and click “start new proposal” to start.

  2. The extension works with all the platforms DAO has been using, so you don’t need to make any changes to your current setup.

  3. It’s free, our goal is to eventually put every DAO to operate completely on-chain, so until Astar DAO decides to write data on-chain; it won’t cost you anything.

My cofounder’s created this video to illustrate how the plugin works for a DAO: Syncvote Demo

4. Next Steps to Implement:

To implement this transformative solution for Astar DAO, we propose the following steps:

  1. After the proposal has been passed, I will convert the Astar Governance Process into a format compatible with Syncvote. An administrator/coreteam member can help me to follow-up and also check its accuracy.
  2. After that, Astar DAO will start announcing to community members on forum, announcement channels on discord and twitter etc., that they can start using Syncvote extension to make new proposals from then on.

In conclusion, I see this as a straightforward implementation that helps to smooth governance experience for Astar DAO community members. I would be grateful if Astar DAO adopts Syncvote.

Thank you for reading my post. I would like to have your feedback on this topic.

Godwin.

Hi @godwin

I thank you very much for creating this proposal. I highlight the ease of use of the extension and I see that the ideal is to focus and facilitate the creation/management of proposals.

I am left with some pertinent questions. I don’t understand what you mean by users getting lost in the technical details, and I don’t understand what you mean by preventing users from bouncing between different platforms.

In general, I like the proposal for its practicality, but I want to understand more about the problems you want to solve.

hi @Juminstock , really appreciate that you went through the details and ask the question.

Technical details here would be:

  1. The governance process
  2. The setup on each process
  3. The template that maybe requires to follow
The current doc is much more complex: Astar_Governance_Whitepaper__current_.pdf - Google Drive

Sometimes, process is updated, and members have to relearn everything manually. What I mean here is that members need a process that smooth their experience, so they will only need to focus on the content.

I don’t understand what you mean by preventing users from bouncing between different platforms.

As Astar aims to go fully decentralized, an on-chain voting must be involved. So author will need to interact with forum and on-chain voting platform to update the proposals or voting results. It would cause some extra works that could be done with a tool.

I hope that my answer goes directly to the concerns you address.

Do you think that it is necessary now for that kind of tool?

Great! One of the biggest issues I’ve seen in DAOs is how to follow up well on the proposals that are asking for resources to the tresury, the forum is a great spot for that, but it’s a lot of work to do (review, interact, correct, vote and approve/deny).

I like the ease of use of your application and watching the demo video, it is true that it is compatible with several interaction platforms.

I don’t see why not try it in our governance, let’s be testers!

Great @Juminstock , thank for sharing.
Seem like notification feature does not work correctly, so I did not know that you replied. Sorry for the long wait.

As you have seen the demo video above, I would suggest that we could arrange a call to see how the product work.
Could you advise how to arrange that call, and also involve Astar team to come to discuss?

Don’t worry about it. Regarding Astar joining, I think this is one more solution for the community, that’s why we should see how they adopt it.

The proposal apparently has not had enough attraction, so I think we should wait to see what my teammates and core team say.

Hi @godwin,

Thank you for your proposal. Your product sounds interesting for managing the governance mechanism and facilitating discussions and votes on different platforms.

However, Astar’s governance is still a work in progress and continues to evolve over time. Adding a product like yours to our current governance will make it obsolete in a few weeks/months as we continue to modify the governance. I suggest waiting for at least the first on-chain Astar governance model before discussing the integration of such a product.

Thanks for the proposal.
As @Gaius_sama said we are moving forward to a new version of Gov in Astar.
Maybe you can adapt your product to fit in the future?

Definitely, please keep me updated.

Thank guys for the response also
